What is our fascination with them? There are house flipping shows from a wide variety of locations and even a “zombie” house flipping show. We just can’t seem to get enough of them.
Is it watching the demolition of a house that helps us virtually release pent up frustration? Is it watching a house go from a disaster to a dream house that gives us hope in general? What is it about these shows that has made them so popular that we are seeing more and more of them on television?
The Disasters
Let’s face it – it does make us feel a bit better about our own homes when we see the mess that some of these homes are in. Some of them are disasters right down to the foundation while others are more cosmetic disasters. Whatever the state, it’s fun to watch a house get torn down and brought back to life.
The Adventure
There’s a sense of adventure in these shows. As each episode progresses you never know what might be discovered. Is the foundation rotted out? Does the house have termites? Does it get vandalized mid-rehab? You just never know what’s going to happen next on these shows. My favorite is when they find a hidden safe in one of the houses they are renovating. Cracking into that safe is always a surprise though I must admit none have yielded anything of value yet.
The Hope
No matter what our house looks like right now, it’s never nearly as bad as the ones on these shows. And there’s something uplifting about that. We take a sense of pride on our belongings and that includes where we live.
The Ideas
Perhaps most of all, it gives us ideas for what our homes could be with a little work here or there. They make it look so easy (it clearly is not, but let’s enjoy the fantasy!). If they can take a home that is a disaster and make it a dream home, just think what we could do with our nice homes… It’s a great thing to ponder!
